I guess you could say I began playing drums at a very early age with a pair of wooden spoons and some pots and pans. Realizing she had a drummer on her hands (or just a kid with a nervous foot stomping, finger tapping disorder) my Mom bought me my first drum set as a Christmas gift when I was 11. I owe a debt of gratitude to my Mom who never once asked me to practice………….only to stop.
Isaac was a classmate and we played music together long before we could drive, well, before I could drive anyway. (I think Isaac started driving when he was 3) We had a blast forming our own band and playing for fun to the tunes of “Hang On Sloopy”, “Wipeout” and “Louie Louie”.
I really hope I will never have to play those songs again.
In my late teens I was playing with some ‘old’ guys with an accordion, sax and stand up bass. We did weddings and parties. These guys were all very good musicians and taught me a lot. I think about them often and as time goes on, I realize they really weren’t that old after all.
Over the next decade or two I sat in with some local bands on several occasions.
I continued to watch and learn from other bands and drummers and continued to practice 'occasionally' at my home.
When Isaac called me in March, 08 to ask me if I would be interested in sitting in with the band, it immediately sparked my interest. He handed me a CD of 25 songs that the band had been working on, 20 of which I had never heard…………..they were popular songs alright, just not Country or by The Beatles.
When I showed up to Doug’s house for my first practice, I got out of my car and could hear music playing but because it sounded so good, I thought it had to be a recording. When I walked in, I found Kris singing and playing keyboards with Doug and Isaac at their guitars. I thought “WOW”, these guys are good.........this could be my first and last practice.
It’s been a great ride and I can only hope that it continues for a long, long time.
On a less musical note, I married my childhood sweetheart and I have two great kids. I am one very lucky man. |
